Every Indian citizen has the absolute right to request any information from the government, if desired, under the Right to Information Act of 2005. By requiring the official to answer within a certain timeframe, the Right to Information Act, 2005 is put into action. Until they have offered a suitable resolution, they cannot postpone it any further or dismiss the application.
Procedure to file an RTI Application
- Identification of a Central Government Department – Identifying the department from which information must be acquired is the first step in filing an RTI to a central government department.
- Properly drafting the application – Writing your RTI application in the required format would be the following step. Additionally, you can submit your application on plain paper; this format is not required. Hindi and English are both acceptable languages for the application. In a similar vein, the government may reply in either language. If you ask more than one question in a single RTI Application, there is a potential that the application may be rejected, therefore be careful to limit your queries to just one topic. A readable and transparent application is a must. Your application can then be sent to the department’s “Public Information Officer.”
- Pay the required fees. -You may already be aware that each RTI that you file carries a fee. Therefore, an Indian Postal Order for Rs. 10 must be included with every application to be submitted to a federal government department.
- Submit an application- Send your RTI request through fast post or registered mail once the aforementioned steps have been completed, and then wait for the government to respond. You can contact the central information commission if you don’t hear back from the applicant within 30 days after sending the application.
- State governments and all central government offices can use this offline technique, and when you submit or send your application, you will obtain a confirmation of receipt.
Right to information applications can now be submitted offline as well as online. Even yet, only Central Government Departments and allied Ministries—including the PMO, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, the Secretariats of the President and the Vice President, and the Secretariats of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha—can submit RTI applications online.
